American politician Javier Gonzales has been confirmed dead. He died on Wednesday, February 9, 2022. He died at the age of 56 after a long illness.
Before his death, Gonzales served as the 42nd mayor of Santa Fe from 2014 to 2018.
He was the city’s first and only openly gay mayor and held the office of Santa Fe County Commissioner, serving two terms.

A Facebook from Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, where the former mayor also worked, indicated that he passed away peacefully.
“Today, CHRISTUS St Vincent learned that our loved and greatly admired friend and colleague, Javier Gonzales, passed away peacefully,” the post said.
“During his time at CHRISTUS St Vincent, Javier’s leadership and contributions to the work of our mission exemplified our core values of excellence and compassion.”
“We are better for his having contributed to our mission, and we will be less without him. We are deeply saddened by this loss, and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends,” the statement added.
New Mexico governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, released a statement following his death, saying ‘Gonzales was a trailblazer, a fierce advocate, and a dedicated leader.’
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of an undisputed leader and deeply treasured member of the northern New Mexico community. Javier Gonzales was a trailblazer, a fierce advocate, and a dedicated leader – he was also a beloved son, a remarkable father, and an incredible friend, including to me,” the statement said.
The cause of Javier Gonzales’ death could be linked to stage four cancer as he personally disclosed that he was diagnosed in his mid-50s.
In October 2020, Senator Pete Campos tweeted that Gonzales was diagnosed with stage four cancer. Gonzales himself disclosed this during an interview in October 2020.
He said he was diagnosed after he struggled with hip pain and a loss of energy and that doctors had found a tumor near one of his kidneys.

Despite being gay, he fathered two children; the father of two daughters, Cameron, 22, and Cadence, 16. Information about the mother of his children is unavailable at this time.
