Momoa, an only child, was created by Coni (Lemke), a photographer, and Joseph Momoa, a painter, in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 1, 1979.
His mother is of German and Irish descent with self-declared Pawnee background, while his father is of Native Hawaiian ancestry.
He and his mother moved to Norwalk, Iowa, where he was raised, shortly after his parents divorced. He received his diploma from Norwalk High School, where he played soccer with Brandon Routh. He went to Hawaii University.
At the age of 19, Momoa made a choice to go to an audition for the television series Baywatch Hawaii while continuing to live and work in Honolulu. He was then cast as Jason Ioane (1999–2001).
