Momoa, an only child, was born to Joseph Momoa, a painter, and Coni (Lemke), a photographer, in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 1, 1979. His mother, who also claims to be of Pawnee ancestry, is of German and Irish descent, while his father is of Native Hawaiian descent.
He and his mother moved to Norwalk, Iowa shortly after his parent’s divorce, where he was raised. He graduated from Norwalk High School, where he competed on Brandon Routh’s soccer team. He studied at Hawaii University.
