Janice Burgess: The creator of The Backyardigans

Janice Burgess, a talented show creator and television screenwriter, has passed away at the age of 72.

She was the mastermind behind the popular cartoon children’s series, The Backyardigans, which debuted on Nickelodeon in 2004 and later aired on Nick Jr. Burgess had a long and successful career in the entertainment industry, working on various projects for Nickelodeon, including the revival of the TV show Winx Club.

Born in the Squirrel Hill area of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Burgess studied art history at Brandeis University and began her career working at WQED TV station in Pittsburgh before moving on to the Children’s Television Workshop.

She eventually became a Nickelodeon executive, overseeing production for the Nick Jr. channel and working on beloved series like Blue’s Clues, Allegra’s Window, and Gullah Gullah Island.

In addition to her work on The Backyardigans, Burgess co-developed the show Bubble Guppies. Her creative talents and keen storytelling abilities made her a standout in the industry. Writer and producer Fracaswell Hyman confirmed Burgess’ passing on social media, paying tribute to her influence and friendship.

The Backyardigans ran for four seasons and a total of 80 episodes, captivating audiences with its imaginative storytelling and colorful characters. Fans can now enjoy the animated series on Paramount+ as they remember Burgess’s lasting legacy in the world of children’s television.
