Janice Burgess, a writer for Winx Club and the creator of the Nickelodeon series “The Backyardigans,” passed away at the age of 72. Fracaswell Hyman, a close friend of Burgess’s, verified her passing. The two had collaborated on projects before.

Burgess went to The Ellis School while growing up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood. In 1974, she earned a bachelor’s degree in art history from Brandeis University.
During the early 1990s, Burgess worked as a project manager for Ghostwriter and as an assistant travel coordinator for 3-2-1 Contact. Eventually, she rose to the position of vice president within the Nick Jr. division of Nickelodeon.
Most famously, Burgess was the creator of the well-liked animated musical children’s television program The Backyardigans. Character designs were created by children’s book author and illustrator Dan Yaccarino.
