Janet Louise Yellen, an economist from the United States who was born on August 13th, 1946, has been the country’s 78th secretary of the treasury since January 26th, 2021. Yellen was raised in Brooklyn’s Bay Ridge neighbourhood after being born into a Polish Jewish family. Her mother, Anna Ruth (née Blumenthal, 1907–1986), chose to raise her children at home despite having previously worked as an elementary school teacher.
From 2014 until 2018, she presided as the Federal Reserve’s fifteenth chair. Being the director of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, she is the first person to hold both of those posts. Prior to starting her employment as a staff economist for the Federal Reserve Board in 1977, she worked as an assistant professor at Harvard University from 1971 to 1976.
She served as an instructor at the London School of Economics from 1978 to 1980. She has been a professor at the University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business since 1980, most recently holding the Eugene E. and Catherine M.
