Patricia “Patty” MacLachlan born on March 3, 1938, and died March 31, 2022, was an American children’s author best known for her 1986 Newbery Medal-winning novel Sarah, Plain and Tall, which was later adapted into a television film starring Glen Close and Christopher Walken.

MacLachlan began writing when she was 35 years old after her children had started school. MacLachlan later collaborated on several picture books with her daughter, Emily MacLachlan Charest.
