James Mtume was a jazz icon in the United States. Mtume is mostly known to the Hip Hop age for his contribution to Notorious B.I.G.’s crossover smash “Juicy,” which sampled his 1983 single “Juicy Fruit.”
The Philadelphia native has collaborated with some of the twentieth century’s best jazz performers, including Miles Davis, Pharaoh Sanders, Lonnie Liston Smith Jr., and others.
He’s also written songs for R&B performers including Stephanie Mills, Donny Hathaway, and, more recently, Mary J. Blige, Jodeci, and others.
Mtume launched a lawsuit against Sony Music/Epic Records in July 2018, attempting to retrieve the rights to two albums and his smash single Juicy Fruit.
Mtume claimed exclusive ownership of these recordings, but Sony maintained that the albums were recorded for hire.
