James McAvoy grandparents: Mary Johnstone, and James Johnstone

Mary Johnston and James Johnstone were James McAvoy’s maternal grandparents. At a point in time, McAvoy lived with his grandparents. McAvoy’s parents separated when he was just 7 years old, and when he was 11, they got divorced. During that time McAvoy was living with his mother suffered from poor health and subsequently sent him to live with her parents, Mary and James Johnstone, in the nearby Drumchapel area of Glasgow.

After McAvoy got separated from his father in childhood, he had not been in contact with him. He has mentioned in an interview in 2016 that, as a child, he considered becoming a priest because it seemed to be a way to explore the world through missionary work. He, however, made his acting debut at the age of 15 in “The Near Room” in 1995.
