Former Scorpions and Kingdom Come drummer James Kottak has passed away. He died on Tuesday morning, January 9, 2024, in Louisville, Kentucky. He was 61 years old.
James Kottak’s death was announced by his daughter, Tobi. There was no cause of death stated by her. He died a natural death.

Scorpions paid tribute to Kottack in a Facebook post, “Very sad news … our dear friend and Drummer for 20 years James Kottak has passed at the age of 61,” the band wrote alongside a black-and-white image of Kottack. “James was a wonderful human being, a great musician, and a loving family man … he was our Brother from another Mother and will be truly missed. … Rock ‘n Roll Forever. RIP James.”
James Kottak was born on December 26, 1962, and was raised in Louisville, Kentucky, U.S. by his parents. He gained early mainstream exposure during his time with Kingdom Come, appearing on the band’s first two studio albums, the first of which included their biggest hit, “Get It On”.
James Kottak was married to Athena Bass, Tommy Lee’s younger sister, who is also a drummer and was a fellow member of Kottak. The couple had three children between them, including their son, Matthew, and Athena’s two children from two prior relationships. Miles is currently the drummer for the indie rock band Bad Suns.
