James Cameron (born August 16, 1954, in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian filmmaker noted for his broad vision and pioneering special-effects films, most notably Titanic (1997), for which he received an Academy Award for best director, and Avatar (2001). (2009).
Cameron studied art as a kid and subsequently contributed sketches to Titanic.
He and his family relocated to California in 1971.
Cameron studied physics at California State University, Fullerton, and worked as a machinist and truck driver before seeing Star Wars (1977) and deciding to try his hand at filmmaking.
Cameron was employed as a production designer in 1980, and he made his directing debut the following year with Piranha II: The Spawning. Although the film was a box office disappointment, it inspired Cameron to develop his own work.
The result was Terminator (1984), an action movie about a robot hitman that launched the career of actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and established Cameron as a bankable filmmaker.
