He had no disease.

The Oscar nominee’s family made the announcement on Thursday, July 7 through Twitter. “It is with tremendous regret that we notify you of Jimmy’s demise on the evening of July 6,” said the statement.

He returned to the character in 1974’s The Godfather Part II, making a cameo at the conclusion.

The Emmy nominee began his career in off-Broadway plays and TV programs before landing an uncredited role in Irma la Douce in 1963.

His meteoric career began in 1969, when he appeared in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Rain People, alongside future Godfather costar Robert Duvall.

The following year, he co-starred with Billy Dee Williams in the television adaptation of Brian’s Song, for which he received his first Emmy nomination.

The picture was such a smash sensation that Columbia Pictures rereleased it in cinemas.

“The family appreciates the outpouring of love and genuine sympathies and begs that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.”

Caan was married four times: from 1961 to 1966 to Dee Jay Mathis, 1976 to 1977 to Sheila Marie Ryan, 1990 to 1995 to Ingrid Hajek, and from 1995 to 2017 to Linda Stokes. Tara, his 57-year-old daughter, and his sons Scott, 45, Alexander, 31, James, 26, and Jacob, 23, survive him.

Caan was born in the Bronx in 1940.
