Born in Deal Island, Maryland on August 2, 1924, James Arthur Baldwin (1924–1987) was the son of Emma Berdis Jones and was raised in Harlem, New York. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, New Orleans, Louisiana-born Baptist preacher David Baldwin, whom Baldwin called his father and who he remembered as being quite severe.
