Justice Jacob Wit, a former judge of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), unexpectedly passed away on January 16, 2024, at the age of 71.

The CCJ acknowledged Justice Wit’s passing this afternoon in a news release.
The seventy-one-year-old Wit had to retire from the CCJ due to illness. According to Justice Wit’s message of memory, the Chief Justice stated that he was the first person to serve as a member of the CCJ bench in 2005 and that he did so with great dedication until his retirement in December 2023.

Judge Wit presided over cases in Curaçao, the Netherlands Antilles, and the Dutch Windward Islands of Saba, Sint Maarten, and Sint Eustatius before joining the CCJ. He has so long been involved in the local legal community.
He was also a Ranking Member of the CCJ Academy for Law and held the part-time position of President of the Constitutional Court of Saint Maarten. In 2020, he was granted the Nederlandse Juristen Vereniging Award as a testament to his considerable and fruitful efforts to create and maintain public trust in the judicial system.
