Jack Williams Hayford was born on June 25, 1934, in Los Angeles, California, to parents Anita Dolores (née Farnsworth) (1916-1997) and Jack Hayford (1911-1979), who had wed two years earlier on September 28, 1932.

Hayford’s neck muscle condition, which existed at birth but later became better, was a problem. In addition to working as a switchman for the Southern Pacific Railroad, his father had been a young military service member.

Dolores Hayford was a Bible teacher who spoke at Women’s Aglow Fellowship and interdenominational women’s seminars (now Aglow International). Hayford has said that even though his parents weren’t always churchgoers, they gave him a Christian upbringing.
