Before applying for the role of Spider, the now-18-year-old actor, who was 12 at the time, watched the first “Avatar” every day for a month.
After learning five years ago that he would be a part of James Cameron’s much-awaited Avatar sequel, Jack Champion, who was 12 at the time, watched the initial 2009 version of Avatar every day for a month. 18-year-old Champion says, “Three hours, every day.” It was a favorite of mine growing up.
Following appearances in Avengers: Endgame and the 2018 comedy-horror film The Night Sitter, Champion plays Miles “Spider” Socorro in Avatar: The Way of Water. He had to go through a drawn-out audition process in order to get the role.
He recalls that the procedure took four months and started with self-tapes. The casting director (Margery Simkin) and he then met through Skype. Numerous auditions took place. I never believed that I would get hired without a doubt.
Since, in my opinion, you don’t want to set yourself up for tragedy as an actor. You simply never stop being grateful, as in, “Hey, at least I made it this far.” I can always vouch for having arrived here.
