In Pewaukee, Wisconsin, on March 22, 1989, Justin James Watt was born. Watt was raised with two younger brothers who both played football for the NFL. During his adolescence, Watt developed a passion for both ice hockey and football. He gave up hockey at the age of 13 and concentrated entirely on football, citing the time and financial sacrifices required to play both sports at the same time.

JJ participated in track & field, basketball, baseball, football, and basketball during his high school years. During this time, he developed a passion for football and helped his club to significant victories. In his senior year, Watt was also chosen for the All-State First Team and was voted the team’s MVP. Despite his success, universities did not actively pursue JJ.

Eventually, JJ was given the scholarship to play tight end for Central Michigan University. His stay at CMU turned out to be brief because he transferred to the University of Wisconsin to play defensive end after only a year. During this time, Warr began to bench quarterbacks like there was no tomorrow.

JJ led the club in tackles for loss, quarterback hurries, blocked kicks, and forced fumbles in the 2010 season. He recorded 42 solo tackles, 20 assisted tackles, 21 tackles for loss, and 7 sacks in that season.
