Ivan Vitalievich Kuliak is a Russian artistic gymnast who was born in Kaluga, Russia on February 28, 2002. He is currently 20 years old.
In March 2022, Kuliak is reported to have used the “Z” symbol on his t-shirt, while he stood next to a Ukrainian athlete. The “Z” symbol, is commonly used by Russian invading forces in Ukraine which means za pobedy (for victory).
By displaying the symbol next to a Ukrainian athlete, Illia Kovtun, who won the event, Kuliak showed his stands in the war. It meant he is in support of the invasion of Ukraine whilst the world is against the invasion.
The incident happened during the medal ceremony of the parallel bars competition at the 2022 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup series in Doha, Qatar’s capital.
It is announced by the FIG that they will be meeting with the Gymnastics Ethics Foundation to begin disciplinary proceedings against Kuliak.
