Ivan Kuliak, the Russian artistic gymnast, is currently in the news facing condemnation for using the “Z” symbol on his t-shirt, while he stood next to a Ukrainian competitor. Kuliak could possibly be facing a ban from other international competition in the future.
Ivan Vitalievich Kuliak was born in Obninsk, Russian on February 28, 2002. He is currently 20 years old.
The “Z” symbol, a letter that is not part of Cyrillic alphabets, is commonly used by Russian invading forces in Ukraine which means za pobedy (for victory). Kuliak displaying the symbol next to a Ukrainian athlete, Illia Kovtun, who won the event showed his stands in the war. It meant he is in support of the invasion of Ukraine whilst the world is against the invasion.
This incident happened during the medal ceremony of the parallel bars competition at the 2022 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup series in Doha, Qatar’s capital.
The FIG has announced they will be meeting with the Gymnastics Ethics Foundation to begin disciplinary proceedings against Kuliak.
