Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has commended the recent conviction and sentencing of individuals accused of financial crimes at the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) in Ghana. This comes after former MASLOC CEO, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, and former COO, Daniel Axim, were found guilty of multiple charges including causing financial loss to the state.

During an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse, Mr. Kpebu expressed satisfaction in the government’s ability to recover the funds lost to these convicted individuals. He emphasized the importance of holding public officials accountable for their actions, stating that individuals stealing from the state must be stopped to prevent further drainage of the country’s resources.

Mr. Kpebu also highlighted the need for political accountability, mentioning that he changes his support between political parties every eight years to ensure that corruption is prosecuted and the stolen funds are returned to the state. He warned against allowing any political party to remain in power for too long, as it could lead to the erasure of evidence of corruption.

Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while Daniel Axim received a five-year prison sentence with hard labor. The charges against them included causing financial loss to the state, theft, money laundering, and violating public procurement laws. The trial, which began in 2019, involved six witnesses called by the state, with Tamakloe-Attionu being tried in absentia as she absconded after obtaining court permission for a medical check-up abroad.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of holding public officials accountable for their actions and ensuring that stolen funds are recovered for the benefit of the country.
