Bongo lawmaker, Edward Bawa, has expressed his concerns about the proposal to hand over the management of key energy institutions in Ghana to the private sector. According to him, allowing private control of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Volta River Authority (VRA), and the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) would pose a serious threat to the security of the nation.
During an appearance on the Key Points show on TV3, Edward Bawa disagreed with Otumfuo’s suggestion that privatizing these institutions would lead to better performance. He emphasized the importance of maintaining control over these crucial infrastructure for reasons of security and strategic importance.
In a recent address at the commissioning of a 430-kilometre natural gas pipeline, the Asantehene supported the idea of involving the private sector in the management of these energy institutions. He argued that government involvement alone is not sufficient for the efficient operation of these entities and that diversifying ownership by bringing in qualified private sector players would lead to improved performance and attract more investors.
Edward Bawa cautioned against rushing into privatization without proper transparency and accountability, pointing to the issues faced with the Power Distribution Services (PDS) deal as a cautionary tale. He stressed the need for a balanced approach that involves both government and private sector participation to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the energy sector.
As discussions continue on the future direction of these key energy institutions in Ghana, it is evident that there are differing opinions on the best way forward. The ultimate goal should be to find a solution that maximizes efficiency, promotes sustainable development, and prioritizes the interests of the nation.
