Israeli war cabinet meets to discuss response to Iranian attack

Israel’s war cabinet recently convened to discuss its response to Iran’s unprecedented drone and missile attack. The decision reached during the meeting was not disclosed to the public. Despite strong condemnation from its allies, including calls for restraint, Israel remains determined to retaliate against Iran.

Lt Gen Herzi Halevi, the Israeli military’s chief of staff, emphasized that the attack on Israeli territory would not go unanswered. While he did not outline a specific course of action or timeline, analysts speculate that Israel may opt for a limited strike, such as a cyberattack or targeted infrastructure damage.

The attack, which saw over 300 drones and missiles launched at Israel, was largely intercepted by Israeli forces with support from the US, UK, France, and other nations. No fatalities were reported, and the damage was minimal. World leaders have urged caution to prevent further escalation in tensions in the Middle East.

In a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, US President Joe Biden reiterated America’s unwavering commitment to Israel’s security. However, the US declined to participate in any retaliatory strike against Iran, emphasizing the need for a ceasefire and the safe return of hostages in Gaza.

Meanwhile, violence continues to escalate in the occupied West Bank following the death of an Israeli teenager, Benjamin Achimeir, near Ramallah. The Israeli government attributed his killing to a “terrorist attack” and vowed to investigate the deaths of two Palestinians allegedly killed by Israeli settlers.

Amid rising tensions, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called on all parties to exercise restraint and prevent further escalation. The situation remains precarious, with the international community closely monitoring developments in the region.
