As announced by the Royal Academy of Gastronomy (RAG) on social network X this Sunday, María Isabel Mijares, who was born in Mérida in 1942 and is regarded as the first woman in Spain to work as an oenologist, passed away this Sunday in Madrid at the age of 81.

The RAG notes in her obituary that “Maribel was a pioneer in a world that was then predominantly male” and recalls how, in 1967, she was awarded a scholarship by the French Government to study at the University of Bordeaux’s Institute of Oenology, where she earned a degree in Oenology and a higher diploma in Wine Tasting.
In addition, he earned the Diplôme d’Études Approfondies in 1970 after completing his PhD in oenology at the Bordeaux Institute of Oenology thanks to a scholarship from the Juan March Foundation.
She was the first woman to chair the Valdepeñas Wine Denomination of Origin Regulatory Council and the first winemaker in Spain.
