Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Mahama, has shrugged off criticism about her age and expressed her confidence in her ability to lead the country if given the opportunity.
Speaking at a gathering of female media professionals in Accra, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang addressed remarks made by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who questioned her suitability for the role based on her age. At 72, the academician emphasized that her age should not be a hindrance to her candidacy, highlighting her wealth of experience and wisdom as assets that would benefit the country if the NDC emerges victorious in the election.
Dismissing the age-focused criticisms as distractions, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged the public to value experience and competence in leadership, asserting that these qualities are crucial for the progress and development of the nation. She also challenged detractors to focus on substantive issues rather than resorting to age-related attacks.
In a bold affirmation of her readiness for the role, she stated, “Let everybody understand that I’m very proud of every minute God has given me, and if he gives me more, I’ll be more grateful. But my life is in His hands not anybody’s hands. I don’t consider my age as a nuisance, I consider it as a blessing.”
With a firm belief in her abilities and a commitment to serving the nation, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang remains undeterred by criticism and unwavering in her dedication to contributing positively to leadership if given the opportunity to do so.
