American rapper Janae Nierah Wherry, known in showbiz as Sexyy Red, was born in the United States on April 15, 1998.
Wherry was raised in Missouri’s St. Louis County. She decided to write a song about her partner cheating on her once she started rapping. She decided on the stage name “Sexyy Red” because she thinks she is sexy and since Red was her middle school nickname.
After covering Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles” for her song “Ah Thousand Jugs” in 2018, Sexyy Red rose to prominence online. Wherry’s first single, “Ah Thousand Jugs,” was released in 2018.
In 2021, she issued Ghetto Superstar, her debut mixtape. And in 2022, she and Summer Walker collaborated on the disputed “Sense Dat God Gave You” music video.
When she and Tay Keith put out “Pound Town” in January 2023, the song’s explicit nature later led to its online success. She made an appearance on NLE Choppa’s remix of “Slut Me Out” in April.
Sexyy Red and Nicki Minaj worked together on “Pound Town 2,” which was released in May and gave her her first appearance on the Billboard Hot 100.
In August 2023, Wherry joined Drake as the opening act on his It’s All a Blur Tour after making guest appearances at prior shows.
