Tributes have flooded social media following Irving Abella’s unexpected death.
Over five decades ago, Irving Abella married his soulmate, Rosalie Silberman Abella, a Canadian jurist who was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada over two decades ago.

She was the first Jewish woman and the first former refugee to be appointed to Canada’s Supreme Court in 2004.
Rosalie is said to have served on the court until 2021 when she announced her retirement.
Irving and Rosalie had two children, Jacob and Zachary, who are both lawyers. Irving Abella died the day after his 82nd birthday after a long illness.
His archives, which include extensive oral history interviews he conducted, are housed in the Archives of Ontario’s Irving Abella Collection.
In 2006, Abella was awarded the Louis Rosenberg Distinguished Service Award by the Association for Canadian Jewish Studies.
He also received the Queen Elizabeth II, Diamond Jubilee Medal, in 2012 and the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002.
