Ronald Wray Hodges, a former catcher in Major League Baseball who played his whole 12-year career with the New York Mets, was born on June 22, 1949.

The Baltimore Orioles originally selected Hodges in the sixth round of the 1970 Major League Baseball Draft, but he declined to sign.

He was also selected by the Atlanta Braves in the first round, tenth overall, of the 1971 amateur draft (secondary phase active), and the Kansas City Royals in the first round, fifteenth pick, both of which he declined to sign with.

He eventually signed with the Mets after being chosen by them in the second round of the amateur draft in 1972. (secondary phase).

Gilbert Ray Hodges was a first baseman and manager with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers for the most of his 18-year MLB career.

He was an American. The only player with more home runs or runs batted in during the 1950s was teammate Duke Snider, yet he was still largely recognized as the best first baseman in the major leagues at the time.

From 1960 until 1963, Hodges owned the National League (NL) record for most home runs hit by a right-handed batter in a career.
