As Queen Elizabeth is celebrating her Platinum Jubilee this week, she has officially taken her place as the longest-reigning British monarch. She has also become the longest-reigning female monarch in the world.
Is Queen Elizabeth II related to Queen Victoria?
Queen Victoria was the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from June 20, 1837, until her death in 1901.
Up until now, with her 63 years of reign, she was the longest-reigning British monarch. Her marriage to Prince Albert resulted in nine children who were born between 1840 and 1857.
Her children are Edward VII, Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Arthur, Duke of Connaugh, Leopold, Duke of Albany, Victoria, Princess Royal, Alice, Helena, Louise, and Beatrice.
Most of her children married into other royal families.
It was through the lineage of her son, Edward VII, who was her heir, that Queen Elizabeth II became queen.
The son of Edward II, George V took over after his death in 1910. After George V’s death in 1936, his son Edward III took over.
However, Edward III abdicated in order to marry Wallis Simpson. Hence, the crown went to his younger brother and the father of Queen Elizabeth II, George VI.
