Sergio Mattarella is an Italian politician, jurist, academic, and lawyer who since 2015, has been serving as the president of Italy. From the early 1980s, he was a leading member of the Christian Democracy party until its dissolution.

In 1966, Sergio Mattarella married Marisa Chiazzese. Chiazzese was the daughter of Lauro Chiazzese, a professor of Roman law and rector of the University of Palermo.
They remained married till Chiazzese passed away in 2012. The couple had three children together; Laura who was born in 1967, Bernardo Giorgio, who was born in 1968, and Francesco who was born in 1973.
His eldest child, Laura, is a lawyer who also serves as the current de facto First Lady of Italy. She took on the First Lady representation functions after her mother passed away.
She accompanies her father on state trips and on visits within Italy. She is married to Cosimo Comella with who she shares three children.
