Mona Hammond was a Jamaican-British actress and co-founder of the Talawa Theatre Company who was born on 1 January 1931 in Tweedside, Jamaica. She immigrated to the United Kingdom in 1959, where she lived for the rest of her life.

Hammond was born as Mavis Chin to a Chinese father and a Jamaican mother. She moved to the United Kingdom in 1959 on a Jamaican Scholarship and worked for Norman and Dawbarn Architects. She was an actress who had a long and distinguished stage career. She is best known for her work on British television. She attended evening classes at the City Literacy Institute in London for two years. Mona was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) where she graduated in 1964.
Hammond was married to Michael Saunders in the year 1965. Their union was blessed with a son but unfortunately, Mona’s Marriage hit the rock leading to divorce in 1987. In the 2005 Queen’s Birthday Honours List, Hammond was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), for her services to drama in the United Kingdom.
