She was the only member of the chorus who did not have a solo, and she later described it as a watershed moment in her career when she realized the value of having “tough skin” in the entertainment industry. She danced alongside MC Hammer in an episode of Yo! MTV Raps in 1990 and spent four months touring Japan as a chorus member in Synchronicity.  She was hired as a backup dancer for New Kids on the Block’s performance of “Games” at the 1991 American Music Awards when she returned to the United States. The show’s choreographer, Rosie Perez, noticed Lopez had “star quality” and “did not complain, not once” when asked to perform the dance routine repeatedly at the New York audition. Lopez relocated to Los Angeles for the job in late 1991, where she worked on In Living Color during the day and attended acting classes taught by Aaron Speiser at night. The Fly Girls were being considered for signing by the head of Virgin Records as a girl group to compete with the Spice Girls, but the deal fell through. Lopez left In Living Color after appearing as a Fly Girl in seasons three and four to work as Janet Jackson’s backup dancer. She also made an appearance in the “That’s the Way Love Goes” music video.
