Leonard Cohen was a Canadian singer-songwriter, poet, and novelist who died on November 7, 2016.
Religion, politics, loneliness, sadness, sexuality, loss, death, and personal relationships were all themes he incorporated into his work. In 2011, he was awarded one of the Prince of Asturias Literature Awards and the eighth Glenn Gould Prize. He was made a Companion of the Order of Canada, Canada’s highest civilian honor.
Is Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah religious?
Hallelujah is one of Cohen’s biggest songs of all time. It was released as part of his seventh album, Various Positions in 1984.
When listened carefully, Hallelujah is quite blasphemous. The title is very deceptive, which was intended, and some of the biblical phrases and characters that are thrown into the verses were all figurative.
The whole song was about romance and had absolutely nothing to do with Christianity. The song was actually not an instant hit. Bob Dylan and a host of other musicians recreated it before the world’s attention was drawn to it.
