June Carter Cash, also known as Valerie June Carter, was an American singer, composer, and dancer. She died on May 15, 2003. She was a second wife to musician Johnny Cash and a five-time Grammy Award winner. She was also a member of the Carter family.
Is June Carter Cash related to Jimmy Carter?
June Carter and her sisters were distant cousins of U.S. President Jimmy Carter.
June was recognised professionally as June Carter before she married Cash, and on occasion after their union, she was still given credit as such (as well as on songwriting credits predating it).
She was an actress who also performed on the guitar, banjo, harmonica, and autoharp. Carter Cash was honoured in 2009 by being inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and winning five Grammy Awards.
She began performing with the Carter Family at the age of 10, in 1939, and her parents were also musicians who sang country music.
With the support of her husband Ezra, Maybelle Carter founded “Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters” in March 1943 with her daughters Helen, Anita, and June when the Carter Family trio ceased recording together at the end of the WBT contract.
