In a recent turn of events in Parliament, Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, found himself at odds with the Speaker, Alban Bagbin.
The misunderstanding arose during proceedings when the Speaker asked the MP to leave the Chamber for being held in contempt.
Dr. Afriyie expressed his belief that he was misunderstood by the Speaker, stating that he felt Mr. Bagbin went too far in asking him to walk out. The controversy began when the legislator made comments that were deemed rude by the Speaker.
During the session, the Speaker notified the House about the nomination of new judges to the Supreme Court, prompting a discussion on the approval or disapproval of these nominations. Dr. Afriyie, representing the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), took issue with the Speaker’s handling of the matter, describing his remarks as prejudicial.
Despite the Speaker’s orders for Dr. Afriyie to vacate the Chamber, the MP defended his actions on a radio show, explaining that he meant no disrespect and only sought to express his opinion. He emphasized that his act of bowing to the Speaker while leaving was a sign of goodwill, not malice.
