Gal Maria da Graça Costa Penna Burgos, better known as Gal Costa, was a popular music singer from Brazil. Costa was a key figure in Brazil’s tropicalia music scene in the late 1960s, appearing on the acclaimed compilation Tropicália: ou Panis et Circenses.
Gal met Sandra and Andréia Gadelha, the future wives of Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, when she was ten years old. This earned her the moniker Gau, which was later shortened to Gal. At the age of 14, Costa became interested in Bossa Nova after hearing Joo Gilberto’s “Chega de Saudade” on the radio. Costa then went on to work as a clerk in Salvador’s main record store to get closer to music. Andréia Gadelha introduced her to Caetano Veloso when she was 18 years old, and they became close friends.
Gal made her professional debut on Bethânia’s debut album, which was released in 1965. Caetano Veloso, Bethânia’s brother, wrote the duet “Sol Negro” (Black Sun). Costa then signed with RCA Records and released her first singles, “Eu vim da Bahia,” written by Gil, and “Sim, foi você,” written by Veloso. The following year, Gal met Gilberto in person and performed “Minha Senhora,” written by Gil and Torquato Neto, at TV Rio’s 1st International Music Festival. It failed to captivate the audience at the Festival.
