Her father, Dave, is a real estate agent, and her mother, Jarnie, used to dance. She is the younger sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who are both successful actors in television and film. Ashley and Mary-Kate are both fashion designers.
She made her acting debut in the 2011 thriller Martha Marcy May Marlene, for which she garnered favourable reviews and many award nominations. In the slasher movie Quiet House that followed, she played a supporting role.
In addition to receiving a degree from New York University, Olsen was nominated for a BAFTA Rising Star Award.
By taking part in the 2015 sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron, Olsen joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the film, she portrayed Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch character from comic books.
