DMX began rapping in the start of the 1990s. He had both critical and financial success with his 1998 first album, It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot, which sold 251,000 copies in its first week. He co-founded the clothing companies Tantris, Phat Farm, and Argyleculture as well as the hip-hop record label Def Jam Recordings. Simmons’ net worth was estimated to be $340 million in 2011.

Simmons and producer Rick Rubin formed Def Jam Recordings after collaborating or producing artists including Jimmy Spicer, Run DMC, Whodini, and Kurtis Blow. The signing of musicians including the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, LL Cool J, Jay-Z, DMX, and Kanye West was overseen by Simmons in his capacity as chairman.
