Josh McDaniels, a rookie head coach, surprised everyone by choosing Stidham. Technically, Las Vegas is still in the running for the last AFC playoff place (though their chances are slim to none).
Since entering the league, Carr, a nine-year veteran, has started 142 games for the Raiders, been nominated for three Pro Bowls, and twice led the team to the playoffs. Chase Garbers, a former Cal quarterback, will assist Stidham.
Many people feel Carr has played his final snap with the team because he has no guaranteed money left on his contract and the organization may opt out of it in 2023 with a small dead cap hit.
Some of his remaining pay would become guaranteed if he sustained a serious injury during the final two games.
Is Derek Carr retiring, and why did he leave the Raiders?
Derek Carr, the Raiders starting quarterback, was benched and was not seen by the media throughout the practice that day. He doesn’t appear to be for the remainder of the season.
Carr and the Raiders decided that he would leave the organization to “avoid the apparent distractions,” according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media. Carr won’t participate in practice and will be classified as not injured.
In the final two games of the campaign, Jarrett Stidham will start, with Chase Garbers serving as the team’s backup, according to head coach Josh McDaniels’ announcement on Wednesday.
