Jennifer, who was born on July 24, 1970, in New York’s Bronx to Puerto Rican parents, never wanted an ordinary life. Jennifer refused to study despite the wishes of her mother, a kindergarten teacher, and father, a computer specialist. She aspired to be famous by singing, dancing and acting. She landed a spot at Manhattan’s Dance Studio when she was 17, splitting her time between the Studio and high school. She got her first big break in 1991 when she was cast as a dancer on the US television show In Living Colour.

The odd film and TV role followed, but it wasn’t until 1997 eponymously titled bio-pic about murdered Latin American singer Selena that La Lopez truly broke through, earning the coveted seven-figure salary that so few in Hollywood have. Her burgeoning film career, on the other hand, came at a cost. “When I was doing Selena, I thought to myself, ‘God, I miss singing and dancing and sharing that with the public,'” she recalls. One of her In Living Colour contacts set up a meeting with Tommy Mottola, the president of Sony Records, knowing she wanted to return to her musical roots. He signed her after hearing her demo and in 1998 she began work on her debut album, On The 6, which went platinum in the United States within months of its release. Her next album, J Lo, was released in January 2001, with the single My Love Don’t Cost A Thing reaching number one in the United Kingdom.

Jennifer’s love life has been a roller coaster ride. In February 1997, she married Cuban waiter and model Ojani Noa, but they divorced less than a year later. Sean Combs, aka P Diddy, was her next boyfriend. Jennifer was arrested in connection with a nightclub shooting in New York City in December 1999, but she was later released. The pop diva insisted at the time that she would stick by her man, but the couple’s spokespeople issued a statement on Valentine’s Day 2001 announcing the end of their romance. Puffy was soon cleared of all criminal charges.
