The new corporate owners of CNN are moving to end the new streaming service after a splashy debut.
Warner Bros. Discovery has decided to shut down CNN+, the much-touted streaming service that had been presented as CNN’s bold digital future, in a remarkable turnaround for one of the world’s premier television news outlets.
In the end, CNN+ lasted less than a month.
Is CNN+ shutting down? When is CNN+ shutting down and why?
CNN+ will shut down on April 30, 2022, the company announced on Thursday.
While today’s decision is extremely difficult, it is the best one for CNN’s long-term success was the remarks, Chris Licht, CNN’s incoming president, wrote in a memo.
He reiterates that the shutdown would enable them as a firm to refocus resources on the core products that drive the primary focus: improving CNN’s journalism and reputation as a global news leader.
The shutdown is a stunning and humiliating end to an operation that CNN had sunk 10s of millions of dollars into, from an aggressive nationwide marketing campaign to hiring hundreds of new employees to recruiting big, high-priced media stars like former “Fox News Sunday” anchor Chris Wallace and former NPR co-host Audie Cornish.
