Edgar John Bergen, who was born Edgar John Berggren and died on September 30, 1978, was a famous American actor, comedian, ventriloquist, vaudevillian, and radio performer.
He is best known for creating the characters Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. He was actress Candice Bergen’s father.

For his services to radio, television, and the movie industry, Bergen received three stars upon his induction into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. The stars may be found, respectively, at 6425, 6766, and 6801 Hollywood Boulevard.
To appease his mother, he enrolled in the pre-med program at Northwestern University. Later, he changed to theatre and speech, although he never finished his degree.
