Bill Withers can be regarded as one of the best because, throughout his 18-year career, he scored several top successes, including “Ain’t No Sunshine” (1971), “Grandma’s Hands” (1971), “Use Me” (1972), “Lean on Me” (1972), “Lovely Day” (1977), and “Just the Two of Us” (1981). Withers was nominated for and won three Grammy Awards. The 2009 documentary Still Bill was centered on his life. Withers was honored in 2015 and 2005, respectively, by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He had two tracks included in the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Withers’ “smooth” baritone vocals and “sumptuous” soul compositions were well-known. Lean on Me and “Ain’t No Sunshine,” two of the 1970s’ most frequently recorded songs, were written by him. The former song, one of nine that have topped the Hot 100 chart via various artists, debuted on the chart in multiple versions, including Club Nouveau’s 1987 cover. He set a record for the longest sustained note on an American Billboard chart hit with “Lovely Day,” maintaining a high E for 18 seconds.
