The daughter of a Brazilian mother and a German father, Astrud Gilberto was born Astrud Evangelina Weinert in the Brazilian state of Bahia. Rio de Janeiro is where she was raised. She learned to speak numerous languages with ease because her father was a professor of languages.
She had a son named Joo Marcelo Gilberto after her 1959 marriage to Joo Gilberto, who eventually joined her band. Joo and Astrud separated in the middle of the 1960s. Gregory Lasorsa, a child from a previous marriage, was also friends with his mother.
Later, she started dating jazz saxophonist Stan Getz of the United States, her husband’s musical partner. She arrived in the country in 1963 and has been a resident ever since.
