The US Open, one of the world’s prime tennis showpieces which is set to take place in a few days will sorely miss the German pro player Alexander Zverev.

Zverev announced his withdrawal from the US Open on his Instagram page on Monday saying, “After further examination in Germany, we received confirmation that all three of the lateral ligaments in my right ankle were torn.”

“To return to competition as quickly as possible, to ensure all the ligaments heal properly, and to reclaim full stability in my ankle, surgery was the best choice. My rehab starts now and I’ll do everything to come back stronger than ever!”

The German picked up an ankle injury in a semi-final match against tennis legend Rafael Nadal and had to undergo surgery immediately after the match.

A former number one in the junior rankings, Zverev, captured his first ITF championship at the Fujairah Junior Championships, a Grade 4 competition held in the United Arab Emirates at the beginning of 2012.

Until the following year, when he made back-to-back doubles finals at the Grade A Copa Gerdau and the Grade 1 USTA International Spring Championships, he did not have much success at tournaments that were Grade 2 and above.
