Garth Brooks is an American country music singer-songwriter who was born on February 7, 1962, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His crossover appeal to the pop industry drove him to the top-selling solo artist of all time.
Brooks was raised in a musical household; during the 1950s, his mother briefly worked as a recording artist for Capitol Records. He first showed little interest in music, preferring to focus on athletics. At Oklahoma State University, Brooks was given a track and field scholarship. It was then that he met guitarist Ty England and they started playing in local nightclubs. Brooks earned a bachelor’s degree in advertising in 1984 and relocated to Nashville the following year in the hopes of breaking into the music industry.
Brooks’ initial visit to the hub of country music was, however, brief; he left for Oklahoma after only one day. He married Sandy Mahl, his college sweetheart, in 1986, and the two of them moved back to Nashville the following year. He joined Capitol Records in 1988.
