The national inauguration of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) has been rescheduled for February 12 of this year by the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development (MLGDRD).
The MLGDRD Chief Director, Amin Abdul-Rahaman, signed a letter stating, “We would like to notify you that the District Assemblies’ inauguration date has been rescheduled to Monday, February 12, 2024.” It stated, “More details about the inauguration will be announced soon.”
The inauguration was originally slated for yesterday, February 6, 2024, but a source at the MLGDRD hinted that it had to be rescheduled because it fell on the same day as Parliament was reconvening. As a result, members of Parliament’s attendance at the inauguration of the MMDAs they represent would be impacted.
The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development has rescheduled the national inauguration of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) for February 12 of this year (MLGDRD).
In a letter, Amin Abdul-Rahaman, the Chief Director of the MLGDRD, wrote, “We would like to notify you that the District Assemblies’ inauguration date has been rescheduled to Monday, February 12, 2024.” It said, “More details about the inauguration will be announced soon.”
The inauguration was supposed to take place yesterday, February 6, 2024, but it had to be rescheduled because it coincided with Parliament’s reconvening, according to an MLGDRD source. Consequently, it would affect the attendance of members of Parliament at the inauguration of the MMDAs that they represent.
As a result, in accordance with the directives, the 216 MMDAs nationwide are expected to coordinate the swearing-in ceremony for all 6,215 elected assembly members, marking the official start of their mandate to guarantee the efficient and successful performance of their duties in their respective electoral districts.
Statistics obtained from the Electoral Commission show that of the 66,257 candidates who ran in the district assembly elections held in December of last year, 18,755 were candidates for assembly members and 47,502 were candidates for unit committees.
According to section 5 (1) (b) of the Local Government Act, 2016 (Act 936), which states that “A District Assembly shall consist of one person from each electoral area within the district elected by universal adult suffrage in accordance with regulations made for the purpose by the Electoral Commission,” 6,215 of the 18,755 candidates were elected to serve in the 216 MMDAs.
With five unit committee members per electoral area, 31,075 of the 47,502 total electorate were chosen to serve as unit committee members.
