Impasse between GridCo, ECG over ‘dumsor’ unnecessary –

Edward Bawa, the Member of Parliament for the Bongo Constituency, has voiced his concerns over the ongoing dispute between the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), labeling it as unnecessary.

The issue stems from the intermittent power supply problems, known as ‘dumsor,’ that Ghana has been grappling with for several months.

In a letter addressed to the Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, GRIDCo highlighted ECG’s failure to comply with the load-shedding management instructions issued by the National System Control Center (NSCC). This has resulted in a back and forth between the two entities, with ECG blaming GRIDCo for the power outages, and GRIDCo expressing concerns about ECG’s inability to provide a load-shedding timetable during these incidents.

During an interview on Face to Face on Citi TV, MP Edward Bawa questioned the competence of certain individuals in the energy sector, emphasizing the need for cooperation and understanding of how the system works. He criticized ECG for not following GRIDCo’s power distribution guidelines, which has led to GRIDCo having to disconnect certain areas from the power grid to prevent a total blackout in Ghana.

Mr. Bawa expressed confusion over ECG’s reluctance to publish a timetable for customers, attributing it to a political decision by the government. He suggested that the conflict between the two entities could be resolved if they worked together effectively and collaborated to address the current power supply challenges facing the country.
