Isaac Oppong, a Ghana Immigration Service officer, was charged with murder and appeared before Magistrate Court One last Friday. It is alleged that Oppong shot and killed a motorbike rider at Dzobikope, close to Kleve in the Ho district. The Assistant Immigration Control Officer Two, 30, did not enter a plea.
According to reports, the accused, who was working at the Honuta Immigration Post, shot the deceased guy in the ribcage after he reportedly ignored his stop signal. The victim was 25 years old.
The incident occurred on January 17 while the accused and a colleague were on patrol duty along the Honuta-Klave stretch, according to Sergeant Kwadwo Otibu-Gyan, who represented the republic, in court. The court was presided over by Albert Owusu Annor.
The prosecution said the immigration agents had handguns on them to perform their duties.
The court heard that Christian Dagbey, the deceased, and an additional individual arrived on the road on motorcycles from an illegal route while transporting many gallons of vegetable oil.
The accused allegedly gave them a stop sign at that point, but they drove off. The court heard that Oppong and his companion followed them on a different motorbike, caught up to them near Dzobikope, and captured the dead while the other rider managed to flee.
The accused stated at that point in the prosecution’s case that the rider was attempting to take his duty weapon from him when it unintentionally went off and struck the deceased in the left rib.
After being taken to the Ho Teaching Hospital, the victim was declared dead upon arrival. Oppong was taken into custody the following day, and the handgun serial number H 78876Z was kept as proof.
The corpse has been placed in the morgue for preservation and examination. Oppong was placed under remand in jail by the court until March 19.
