“I’ll terminate SML contract if NDC comes to power” – Mahama claims

John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised to revoke the contentious agreement between Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

He declared that since it was not in the best interests of the country, such corrupt arrangements would not continue under his administration.

In addition to reiterating his readiness to end the SML contract should he be elected, Mr. Mahama emphasized his commitment to strengthening anti-corruption efforts.

“One would have thought that the corruption cases were enough but it has numb Ghanaians. Corruption does not shock Ghanaians the way it used to shock us”, he said.

“An NDC government under me will not recognize or accept this SML agreement. The President has hurriedly got KPMG to audit it, whatever audit they will do I say we won’t accept or respect any agreement with SML.”

Speaking as part of the “Building Ghana Tour” across the Eastern Region, he addressed a gathering of organized labor.

Mr. Mahama said at the same event that Ghanaians are no longer shocked by acts of corruption in the nation.

Citing the latest Corruption Perception Index, he connected the current state of affairs to the government’s alleged lack of commitment to battling the threat.

In the interim, President Akufo-Addo has given audit company KPMG an extension, giving it more time to finish evaluating the contentious deal.

The work of KPMG was originally scheduled to be finished by Tuesday, January 16, 2024; however, the current deadline is Friday, February 23, 2024.

This extension came about as a result of KPMG’s request to the President for more time than the two weeks that were initially allotted for the work.
