The highest level of assurance has been provided by Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, the recently appointed Finance Minister, that he will not deviate from the government’s plans and programs as outlined in the 2024 budget.
Indicating that his one-year tenure as a Minister of State in the Finance Ministry sufficiently equipped him for his new position, Dr. Amin Adam stressed his experience with the ministry, its initiatives, and its difficulties.
On Tuesday, February 15, he said to Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM, “I have been part of the Finance Ministry for about a year now, so I understand and I am familiar with the issues there and I am familiar with the global issues.”
Concerns were expressed that the president’s appointment as a minister came too late and might not have much of an impact, particularly on the weak and impoverished.
In response, he promised to move more quickly to catch up and make sure that the government’s pro-poor initiatives are carried out.
“If you look at the budget that was presented this year, there were several pro-poor initiatives, and I do not intend to depart from those pro-poor initiatives.
“And I will ensure that business follows as usual as it should. We will make sure that we move faster to implement the tax reliefs that were made in the budget and I am going to make sure the poor are insulated.”
He further said that to guarantee the completion of the extended credit facility with the Fund, he will work with the business community and the International Monetary Fund.
